Comments from the Peanut Gallery
Former president Jimmy Carter apologized for his statement that “I think, as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, [the Bush] administration has been the worst in history.”
Mr. Carter claimed that his words were misinterpreted to mean that the Bush administration was the worst in history. “I don’t know how this could have happened,” noted the former peanut farmer and pride of the backwaters of Georgia. Mr. Carter stood by his misstatement with the fortitude, honor and grace with which he stood by our allies during his own “presidency.”
“What I said and what I meant were clearly two different things, just like when I said Jews are racists and responsible for all war. The press grossly mischaracterized that as an antisemitic remark.”
Whitehouse press secretary, Tony Snow, thanked former president Carter, but declined to accept the accolade. “We wouldn’t want to take the claim of worst administration in history from its rightful owner,” noted Mr. Snow. “It’s not as though Mr. Bush has embarrassed the United States by allowing fundamentalist regime to topple the Shah, and then having a poorly constructed rescue attempt fail like a North Korean missile launch.” Nor did he “cancel Christmas, preside over double digit inflation and unemployment or an all time record low 21% approval rating.” Not to mention “ask[ing] his entire cabinet to resign” and gas lines that made “Beattles tickets look easy to come by.” “No, when it comes to massive damage to America’s interests here and abroad, the American people know where to look.”
