We Are With You
As I write this, thousands Iranians are preparing to face the unknown. Their oppressive government, unhappy with merely stealing an election, now wants to trample their bodies as well. These brave men and women will go to the streets again today in defiance. Defiance of a regime that does not trust them. Defiance against the tyranny of small minds. Defiance against a system that sees a barbaric history as its future. Defiance of a regime that would not allow a fair election, even between four handpicked candidates.
There is nothing more precious in this world than freedom. The human spirit cannot live in any other way, but free. To live where it wants. To drink what it wants. To dance where it wants. And to vote for whom it chooses. Freedom is not a privilege, it is not something that needs to be earned and it is not something that needs to be granted. It is something that every person, every Iranian, every American, is born with. As you go out today to regain your freedom, know that we are with you. Know that, although our leaders may be timid, there are still those who will join you in bearing the burden of freedom and democracy.
Today, all Americans are with you. As are all Britons, all Frenchman, Turks, Germans, and Spaniards. All freemen are with you today. Our hearts cheer with your victories and your every defiance; our stomachs turn with your defeats. We see in you hundreds of years of the struggle for freedom; the sacrifices we and our ancestors made. We are all praying for you, for your cause, for your safety and for your freedom. Insha’Allah, you will be free.
